Hunting Temagami Ontario Black Bear Tips Bear Wise - Ontario's Black Bear Population The Number of Bears Prior to the cancellation of the spring hunt, the bear population in Ontario was assumed to be relatively stable with estimates from 75,000 to 100,000 bears. There is now the perception that the number of bears has increased considerably in recent years. The average annual bear harvest prior to the cancellation was approximately 6,400 bears, spring and fall combined. In the years following the cancellation of the spring bear hunt, the average annual harvest has been in the order of 4,900 bears. The difference of 1,500 fewer bears harvested represents a decrease in harvest of about 1.5% of the total population. If all of the 1,500 bears that were not harvested in each year were able to survive to this day, then it is possible to estimate that there has been roughly a 7.5% increase in the Ontario black bear population in the past 5 years. Assuming that there were 100,000 bears, a 7.5% increase would result in a population of 107,500. If there has been a population increase, it would be spread over the entire range where black bear are hunted in Ontario. However, realistically not all of the 1,500 bears that were not harvested each year would survive. As well, the shooting of many nuisance bears goes unreported. An increase of 7.5% in the bear population is possible, but extremely unlikely. New Areas and New Residents There is good evidence that along the southern part of their range, that is the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, the bear population has been slowly growing over the past 20 to 30 years. As abandoned farmland returns to old field habitat, it provides much better habitat for bears. Raspberries, aspen, and hawthorn all grow in this habitat to provide food and cover for bears. Mild winters may also have had an impact by improving natural food supplies for bears. In fact, it is the increase in the human population, particularly in "cottage country", that is a credible explanation for more contact between people and bears. Many retirees now live in "cottage country" year round, increasing the likelihood of sighting a bear. Cottages are also built in areas that were once excellent bear habitat. Both bears and people enjoy river valleys and forested areas. Clearly, an increase in the number of permanent and summer residents in "cottage country" will result in more bear "sightings" but this does on its own does not necessarily suggest more bears.

Temagami Black Bear Hunting in Ontario Hunter Orange
The objective of the hunter orange regulation is to maximize hunter safety without negatively impacting hunting success. Under this regulation, all licensed hunters, including archery hunters hunting during the gun season for deer and moose, are required to wear hunter orange. As well, all black bear hunters hunting during the black bear season are required to wear hunter orange except when in a tree stand. (This exception is in place because, unlike deer and moose, black bears have colour vision.) Waterfowl hunters, wild turkey hunters and archery hunters in archery-only areas are exempt from the hunter orange requirement. A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn. The hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 400 square inches (2,580 square cm) above the waist and be visible from all sides. Open mesh or camouflage hunter orange must not be part of the 400 square inches. A hunting coat or vest generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than hunter orange; a crest or logo which does not completely cover the hunter orange on the side where it is affixed. The head cover may not contain camouflage material. Hunter orange colour standards are generally consistent across North America. Manufacturers can provide information regarding clothing compliance with this standard. Hunter orange product is available at the O.F.A.H. Online Store.
